Anirban Mitra: German luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz continues its electric vehicle offensive with the launch of EQE 500 in the Indian market at an introductory price of Rs 1.39 crore (ex-showroom).

Santosh Iyer, CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, said up to 5 per cent of the overall sales are driven by electric vehicles. The EQE SUV will be sold in India through the CBU route and sits under the flagship EQS 580 in the BEV portfolio. Becoming the fourth all-electric offering from three-pointed stars, the EQE SUV takes an aim at the Audi Q8 e-tron.

Mercedes has emphasised on usage of sustainable material behind EQE. The SUV components weighing more than 70 kilos are made partly from resource-saving materials. Mercedes pushes the quality benchmark higher with a 10-year battery warranty and a service interval of two years.

Weighing over two tonnes, the SUV rides on 20-inch alloy wheels and is suspended over air suspension which alters the ground clearance up to 25 mm at the touch of a button. The 3D illuminated light strip also features at the tailgate. The 4.8-metre-long SUV boasts a boot space of 520 litres and a wheelbase of 3,030 mm.
