Rimac Automobili, a Croatian automaker known for its world’s fastest EV, the Rimac Nevera, is once again making headlines after setting 23 world records, one of which was the 0-400-0 km/h record in 29.93 seconds. This time, Rimac has achieved a remarkable achievement, securing a place in the Guinness Book of World Records as the car has set the record for the fastest speed in reverse at 275 km/h.

Rimac Nevera has broken the previous record of Caterham 7 Fireblade which had remained unbroken for 22 years for the fastest speed in reverse at 165.08 km/h. This test took place at the Automotive Testing Papenburg facility in Germany, where the Rimac Nevera has already broken more than 20 acceleration and braking records in a single day, earlier this year. The Nevera achieved a remarkable top speed of 275.74 km/h (171.34 mph) while in reverse.

The Rimac Nevera was able to set this record owing to its unique design which includes four electric motors, one at each wheel, eliminating the need for gears. One of the most powerful supercars ever, the Rimac Nevera generates 1,914 bhp and 2,360 Nm of torque with its quad-motor electric drivetrain. With nearly 2,000 bhp, the Nevera outperforms even the mighty Bugatti Chiron's 1,500 bhp.

Matija Renic, Chief Program Engineer, Nevera after acquiring this world record said, “It occurred to us during development that Nevera would probably be the world’s fastest car in reverse, but we kind of laughed it off. The aerodynamics, cooling and stability hadn’t been engineered for travelling backwards at speed, after all. But then we started to talk about how fun it would be to give it a shot. Our simulations showed that we could achieve well over 150 mph (240 km/h) but we didn’t have much of an idea how stable it would be – we were entering unchartered territory.”

Driver of the Rimac Nevera, responsible for setting this record, Goran Drndak said, “You’re facing straight out backwards watching the scenery flash away from you faster and faster, feeling your neck pulled forwards in almost the same sensation you would normally get under heavy braking. You’re moving the steering wheel so gently, careful not to upset the balance, watching for your course and your braking point out the rear-view mirror, all the while keeping an eye on the speed.”
