Tata Motors-owned Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) announced on Friday that it intends to begin building the flagship Range Rover model and Range Rover Sport in India for the first time, drastically lowering the pricing by up to Rs 56 lakh. This move is a boost to the government's "Make in India" strategy.

JLR Models In India:

Currently, the Range Rover Velar, Range Rover Evoque, Jaguar F-PACE, and Discovery Sport vehicles are assembled in the company's Pune plant. Range Rover Sport will hit the market in August, while Range Rovers built in India will be delivered by the end of this month.

The local assembly of the flagship models, according to Tata Sons Chairman Chandrasekaran, "marks an inflexion point for the India subsidiary and shows the confidence the company has in the market".

With this, India will be the first country where the company will manufacture the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, outside the UK. The Range Rover Sport price may now begin from Rs 1.40 crore (price down by Rs 29 lakh), while the Range Rover price now starts from Rs 2.36 crore (price down by Rs 45 lakh). The Autobiography variant may begin at Rs 2.60 crore with the biggest price cut of Rs 56 lakh.

For those who are unaware, the Range Rover is equipped with a 3.0-litre six-cylinder petrol engine capable of producing 398PS and 550Nm, as well as a 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel engine capable of producing 350PS and 700 Nm. The Sport receives the same engine, but the 4.4 litre V8 Engine will remain imported.
