Types Of Number Plates: In India, vehicle registration plates come in various colours, each serving a specific purpose and representing different types of vehicles and their usage. It's a common sight to see cars with white, yellow or red number plates on the roads. Additionally, with the increasing prevalence of electric vehicles, cars with green registration plates are becoming more common. Moreover, in urban areas, one may come across cars with blue registration plates. Here's a brief guide to help you understand the different types of car registration plates found in India and their respective meanings.

White Number Plate 

The most common type of registration plate is the white one, typically used by non-commercial private vehicles. These plates feature alphanumeric characters indicating the state code, district code and the vehicle's unique registration number.

Yellow Number Plates

Commercial vehicles such as taxis, buses and trucks are identified by yellow registration plates with black text. Similar to white plates, these also follow an alphanumeric format indicating state and district codes.

Green Number Plates 

With the increasing presence of electric vehicles, green registration plates have become more prevalent. Green number plates are reserved for electric vehicles regardless of the type of the vehicle. These plates feature a green background with white text, following the same alphanumeric format as white and yellow plates.

Red Number Plates 

Red number plates are temporary and primarily used for testing purposes. They're issued to vehicles that are yet to be officially registered but are driven on public roads for testing, demonstration or transit.

Blue Number Plates 

Blue number plates are reserved for vehicles belonging to foreign diplomats, embassies or consulates. Issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, they feature white letters and numbers along with the logo or emblem of the diplomat's country.

Black Number Plates 

Black number plates are self-driven rental commercial vehicles. These number plates are strictly reserved for commercial use and are primarily seen in urban areas.

Red Number Plates With Indian Emblem 

Red number plates adorned with the Indian government's emblem are used for vehicles operated by the central or state governments, often used by high-ranking officials and dignitaries.

Number Plates With An Upward-Pointing Arrow 

Vehicles with number plates featuring an upward-pointing arrow signify membership in the armed forces, such as the army, air force, or navy. Issued by the Ministry of Defense, these plates follow specific regulations and grant certain privileges, such as exemption from certain traffic rules and access to special lanes or routes.
