Despite being a persistent issue in every assembly election for the past 35 years, Maharajganj has not yet been granted district status. Candidates often make promises to the public during their campaigns, but these assurances are forgotten once the five-year term passes.

The demand for creating Maharajganj district began in 1990. To spearhead the movement, a "Zila Banao Sangharsh Samiti" (District Formation Struggle Committee) was formed. Under its banner, residents have held numerous protests and organised market shutdowns over the years. They have submitted memorandums to a host of officials and public representatives, from the Chief Minister to ministers, MPs, MLAs and senior officers, but to no avail.

During one of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's "Seva Yatra" visits to Ekma and Siwan, a delegation led by the late freedom fighter Munshi Singh met with him and formally presented the demand. The Chief Minister reportedly agreed in principle, yet several elections have passed since then and the demand remains unfulfilled.

Area residents, including former Pramukh Imtiaz Ahmad, Prof Subodh Kumar Singh, Ramesh Upadhyay, Ravindra Singh, and others, echo the sentiment of the late Munshi Singh. They state, "This is our constant demand. We always feel that it will be fulfilled soon, but 35 years have passed and it remains incomplete." They have affirmed that the issue of district status for Maharajganj will once again be a major and vocal point in the upcoming election.
