Patna News: The construction of the 5.5-kilometre long bridge over the Ganga River between Bakhtiyarpur and Tajpur is expected to be completed by December 2026. Patna District Magistrate Dr Tyagarajan SM inspected the construction site on Wednesday and directed officials from the Bihar State Road Development Corporation (BSRDC) to speed up the work to meet the timeline.

Bridge to Boost Connectivity Between North and South Bihar

During the visit, the District Magistrate stressed the importance of the bridge in improving road connectivity between North and South Bihar. He noted that the bridge will significantly ease the movement of people and goods across regions.

Advanced Technology Speeds Up Segment Construction

The project also includes work on approach roads, a railway overbridge (ROB) and other infrastructure from Karjan to the Ganga bridge area within Patna district. On-site, different technologies are being used for faster construction—CFTs are deployed on the northern end, a launching gantry is in use at the centre and cranes are being operated on the southern side to assist segment erection.

Three-Phase Project: First Phase Already Completed

The Bakhtiyarpur-Tajpur Greenfield project is being developed in three phases. The first priority section stretches 16.2 km from Chaklalshahi to Tajpur in Samastipur district. The second includes 18.5 km from Dumri to Chaklalshahi. The third section covers the main bridge and associated structures over the Ganga River.

New Route to Ease Traffic on Mahatma Gandhi and Rajendra Setu

The first phase of the project has already been completed. Once the entire stretch is ready, it will provide an alternative route for vehicles coming from Samastipur, Muzaffarpur, and Begusarai towards Vaishali, Saran, and Patna via NH-122 in Tajpur. This is expected to cut travel distance and reduce journey time to key destinations, including national and international tourist spots, major hospitals, religious centres, and universities.

Improved Access to Tourist, Religious, and Medical Destinations

Officials said the bridge will also help decongest existing routes such as Mahatma Gandhi Setu and Rajendra Setu, which currently handle a significant amount of daily traffic. Moreover, it will strengthen cross-border connectivity from Odisha’s Paradip to Nepal.

Emphasising the need for timely execution, the District Magistrate instructed BSRDC engineers to stay aligned with the 2026 deadline. He added that the bridge, once completed, will play a crucial role in regional development and ensure smoother public transport across Bihar.
