The state government has taken a significant step towards strengthening the education of tribal students. This year, a proposal has been prepared for the construction of 15 new hostels for tribal students in six districts of Bihar. The Education Department has given its consent for these hostels, to be built in the districts of Kaimur, Kishanganj, Katihar, Madhepura, Bhagalpur, and Purnia. The proposal will now be sent for approval at a cabinet meeting following endorsement from the Finance Department.

Construction Costs, Capacity And Timeline

According to government sources, the construction of each hostel is estimated to cost around ₹3 crore. These hostels will have accommodation for 100 students each, which will benefit a large number of tribal students. There is a plan to begin the construction of these 15 hostels under the first phase in the new financial year 2026-27. The construction of the hostel buildings will be carried out by the Building Construction Department.

Implementation Under PM-JANMAN Scheme

All these hostels will be constructed under the PM-JANMAN scheme. This scheme is an ambitious initiative of the central government, which aims to connect particularly vulnerable tribal groups with the mainstream. According to officials from the Education Department, the full name of the PM-JANMAN scheme is Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan. The objective of this scheme is to provide tribal communities with basic facilities such as permanent housing, clean drinking water, education, health, roads, electricity, and livelihood opportunities. Regarding the financial structure, the central government will provide 60 per cent of the funds for this scheme, and the state government will provide 40 per cent.

Facilities And Study Environment For Students

In these hostels, students aged 15 to 18 from seven tribal groups will be provided with accommodation and food facilities. All students residing in the hostels will be given free accommodation. A canteen will also be arranged on the hostel premises for meals, so that students can receive nutritious and regular food. In addition, special attention will be paid to creating a better study environment in the hostels. Students preparing for competitive examinations will also receive support, alongside their regular classes. Students will be provided with daily Hindi and English newspapers, as well as important magazines related to examinations.

Future Expansion Plans And Impact

The government has also prepared an expansion plan for a second phase. Under this, a proposal has been put forward for the construction of new tribal hostels in the districts of Jehanabad, Nawada, Buxar, and Darbhanga. The government believes that the construction of these hostels will bring continuity to the education of tribal students, and they will be able to move forward, free from economic and social barriers. This initiative will not only raise the standard of education but will also play a significant role in making the tribal community self-reliant.
