Students enrolled in Kasturba Gandhi Balika residential schools across Bihar will soon receive self-defence training, with the state set to launch a 36-day karate programme. The initiative aims to equip girls from classes 6 to 12 with basic karate techniques to help them protect themselves in times of crisis and build confidence.

According to the Bihar Education Project Council, preparations have been completed to introduce karate training in all 668 Kasturba Gandhi residential schools.

The extended 36-day schedule, an upgrade from the earlier 10-day module, will familiarise students with practical self-defence skills while also encouraging their participation in sports.

Officials said students showing keen interest in karate will be offered professional-level coaching, enabling them to pursue future opportunities as karate instructors.

Preference will be given to appointing female trainers for the programme; however, male instructors may also be engaged where necessary. Trainers will be compensated on a per-day basis, and the Education Department has been consulted regarding the appointment process.
