Bihar State Pollution Control Board has announced the complete ban on firecrackers in Patna, Gaya, Muzaffarpur and Hajipur during Diwali and Chhath Puja to prevent air pollution. The state authorities have given permission to burst green crackers in the rest of the state while the bursting of other firecrackers has also been banned till further order.

Council Chairman Dr DK Shuka said that the order to ban firecrackers in these cities was issued following the instructions of the National Green Tribunal. He said that air pollution is already in a bad category in several cities of the state which may further deteriorate if firecrackers are bursted in upcoming festivals.   

Dr Shukla stated that various chemical elements are being used in firecrackers that can be hazardous to the health of citizens. He highlighted that heavy metals are being used in many firecrackers for coloured lights, which affects health and may lead to serious consciousness in people who have respiratory health issues.

The pollution level in several cities worsened after the advent of winter. The capital, Patna crossed the AQI 129 and pollution levels in other states have also increased in Hajipur, Muzaffarpur and Gaya. Therefore, as a precautionary measure, the government has decided to ban firecrackers.

The Municipal Corporation has started spraying water with anti-smog guns and sprinklers in two shifts from Friday. Machines have been made available in all the zones, through which roads will be washed daily in an attempt to decrease the pollution level.

After the release of the report on the air pollution situation by Bihar State Control Pollution Board on Thursday, Municipal Corporation Commissioner Animesh Kumar Parashar has instructed the executive officers of all the zones to run the water sprinkling machines for four hours each in the morning and evening in two shifts.
