Sareyan, a village in Bihar’s Kaimur district, has a unique way of caring for their cattle. The villagers install mosquito nets for their cows and buffaloes, day and night, to protect them from mosquito bites. This initiative has been going on for the last three years and has attracted attention from other nearby villages as well.
The villagers stated that the mosquito nets have improved the health and milk production of their cattle. They also sleep peacefully in their own mosquito nets, while their cattle rest outside. The village has about 80 mosquito nets for cattle, which are made according to the size of the animals.
The village is about seven kilometres from the block headquarters Mohania and has a population of about 800 people. Only people of the Yadav caste live in the village, who are fond of rearing cows and buffaloes. The price of their good-breed cattle ranges from Rs 70,000 to 80,000.
The idea of using mosquito nets for cattle came after a veterinarian diagnosed an outbreak of mosquitoes in the village. The villagers realised that they were doing everything for their own comfort, while their animals were suffering from mosquito bites. They decided to try this experiment, which turned out to be very successful.

Many deadly mosquitoes breed during the rainy season, which can cause diseases in cattle. Dr Vikas Kumar, Block Animal Husbandry Officer, praised the use of mosquito nets by the villagers and said that it would keep the cattle healthy and prevent any reduction in milk yield. He said that this system was commendable and showed the attachment of cattle herders towards cattle.
