A heartbreaking incident occurred late Friday night near Bharat Milap Chowk in Ambika Bhawani Colony, under the jurisdiction of the Bhagwan Bazar police station in Chhapra city, Bihar. Toxic smoke emitted from an angithi (coal brazier), which was lit inside the house to combat the cold, claimed the lives of four family members, while the condition of three others remains critical. The deceased include an elderly woman and three innocent children, sending a wave of grief throughout the area.
Fatal Gas Accumulation
According to available information, the family members had lit the angithi inside their room before going to sleep due to the intense cold. As the smoke from the brazier filled the closed room, carbon monoxide gas accumulated, causing everyone inside to fall unconscious.
The incident went unnoticed throughout the night. It was only in the morning when other family members opened the door that they discovered the victims. While some were found in an unconscious state, four had already passed away.
Victims Includes Three Infants
The victims who died of suffocation have been identified as 70-year-old Kamlavati Devi, three-year-old Tejansh, seven-month-old Adhya, and nine-month-old Gudiya. The death of the innocent children has devastated the family. Upon hearing the news, neighbors gathered at the scene, and the police and ambulance services were immediately notified.
Family Members Were Visiting For Treatment
It is reported that some family members had come from Varanasi (Banaras) for medical treatment. In the incident, the condition of Anjali, Amisha, Amit Kumar and Sanjay Sharma's wife deteriorated, and they were hurriedly admitted to Chhapra Sadar Hospital. According to hospital sources, the condition of three individuals remains critical, and a team of doctors is treating them under constant monitoring.

Police Action And Safety Appeal
Upon receiving information about the incident, the Bhagwan Bazar police arrived at the scene and completed the necessary legal procedures. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination.
This tragic accident has once again highlighted the dangers of using angithis or lighting fires inside closed rooms during the winter season. The local administration has appealed to the public to adopt safe measures to protect themselves from the cold to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
