In a significant move ahead of Independence Day, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has launched an annual toll pass scheme for owners of non-commercial vehicles such as cars, jeeps, and vans, allowing them to cross National Highways and Expressways up to 200 times for just Rs 3,000.
The annual pass is valid for one year or 200 toll crossings, whichever comes first. Once the limit is reached, vehicle owners can recharge the pass for another Rs 3,000 to continue availing the benefits. Normally, a car pays Rs 140 per toll, but under this scheme, only Rs 15 will be deducted per crossing from the Fastag.

Prabhakar Singh, manager of the Patna-Bakhtiyarpur Toll Plaza on NH-30, explained that long-distance travellers will see substantial savings. For instance, a journey from Patna to Ranchi, which typically costs around Rs 1,000 in tolls, would now cost only about Rs 100 for vehicles using the annual pass.
The annual pass can be activated via the Highway Yatra App or the NHAI website, allowing car owners to avoid the hassle of frequent Fastag recharges. Benefits begin within two hours of payment.
Additionally, for vehicle owners living within a 20 km radius of the toll plaza, who previously paid Rs 350 per month (Rs 4,200 per year) for a monthly pass, the new annual pass offers savings of Rs 1,200 while covering the entire year at a single payment of Rs 3,000.
This initiative is expected to ease travel expenses for regular highway commuters and encourage greater adoption of digital toll payment systems across India.
