Torrential rain on Friday and Saturday afternoon caused severe waterlogging across most of Patna's roads, bringing the city to a standstill. About two hours of heavy rain on Friday inundated major thoroughfares and local neighborhoods, including Gandhi Maidan, Kankarbagh, and Patliputra Colony, leading to massive traffic disruptions.

In many areas, overflowing drains sent water flooding onto the streets, with levels reaching above the knee in busy commercial centers like Boring Road. This caused numerous vehicles to break down mid-journey and left commuters stranded for hours. Local shopkeepers suffered losses as floodwater entered their shops and homes.

Municipal Corporation Launches Drainage Operations

In response, the Patna Municipal Corporation and Budco deployed teams to begin drainage work as soon as the rain started. Municipal Commissioner Animesh Kumar Parashar stated that all pumping stations were activated and drainage was carried out "on a war footing." He claimed that despite the heavy downpour, the Quick Response Team (QRT) successfully cleared water from most low-lying areas including Rajendra Nagar, the airport, and Gandhi Maidan within a few hours.

Weather Update And Forecast

The downpour was part of the active southwest monsoon, with a red alert for heavy rain having been issued for the capital on Friday. The city recorded its highest rainfall of the season on Friday at 40.6 mm.

According to the Meteorological Centre, a cyclonic circulation over northwest Uttar Pradesh is causing the weather pattern. While only light rain is expected for Patna on Saturday, a heavy rainfall warning remains in place for six other districts, including Supaul, Araria, and Kishanganj. No significant change in temperature is expected over the next five days.
