The controversy around the special intensive revision (SIR) in Bihar is far from dying down as Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and AIMIM have filed a petition in the Supreme Court demanding extension of the deadline for filing objections.

The Election Commission had concluded the electoral roll revision on August 31 and had given a time period of one month till September 1 to those whose names had been left out for any reason or those whose names had been included but are not the voters.

The Supreme Court will hear the petition, seeking a deadline extension, on September 8. On Friday, advocates Prashant Bhushan, Shoaib Alam, and Nizam Pasha mentioned the new petitions in front of a bench of Justices Surya Kant, JoymalyaBagchi and Vipul M Pancholi and requested an early hearing.

Alam and Bhushan said that RJD and some other parties have filed a petition in the top court, demanding an extension of the deadline for filing objections.

Giving a reason behind the demand, Alam said that the number of claims and objections is increasing rapidly, and therefore, there is a need to extend the time.

Nizam Pasha, who was representing AIMIM, said that before the court's August 22 order, 84,000 claims were filed, while after the order, the number rose to 95,000.

The bench asked whether they had contacted the Election Commission in this regard. To this, Bhushan said that his request was not considered by the poll body.

Eventually, the court agreed to hear the case and ordered to put these applications for hearing along with the main case on September 8.

RJD's application also mentioned the difficulty of people in filing claims due to floods in many areas of Bihar. RJD has requested the court to extend the deadline for filing objections by two weeks to September 15.
