HDFC Life Insurance on Monday said certain data leak cases have been reported and the potential impact of this breach is being assessed. The company said it has started information security assessment and data log analysis. "We have received communication from an unknown source, who has shared certain data fields of our customers with us, with mala fide intent," HDFC Life said in a regulatory filing.
The company said a detailed investigation is underway in consultation with information security experts to assess the root cause and take remedial action as required.
The company said its further investigation is ongoing to assess the potential impact. The company said it would take utmost care to address the concerns of its customers and take action to protect their interests. Last month, insurance regulator IRDAI had directed two insurance companies to audit their IT systems after concerns were raised over recent cases of policyholders' data leaks.

Without naming the insurance companies, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has said that it takes data breaches very seriously and stressed that it will continue to engage with the companies to ensure that the interests of policyholders are fully protected.
Star Health Insurance had recently admitted to a data breach. Tata AIG is another insurance company that faced a data leak. In a release, IRDA said it is closely monitoring the situation in the case of the concerned insurance companies and is in touch with their management.
The regulator had said regular updates are being received to ensure full protection of policyholders' data and interests and the company is taking all steps to prevent the threat posed by this breach.
