Since the onset of the IndiGo crisis, air travel has become significantly more expensive. Travelers are now paying several times the usual fare to travel from one corner of the country to another. Meanwhile, fares for international routes have also started to touch the sky. Despite government-imposed price caps, prices on international routes are surging due to reduced capacity.

Domestic Fare Surge

Despite Caps On December 6, the Indian government capped airfares at Rs 7,500 for flights up to 500 km and Rs 18,000 for flights exceeding 1,500 km. However, for long-distance routes like Pune-Guwahati, flight fares are currently ranging between Rs 18,000 and Rs 31,000, while a ticket from Pune to Kochi costs around Rs 32,000. On December 11, fares for the Delhi-Bengaluru route were recorded between Rs 18,000 and Rs 28,000.

Dubai Fares Triple

If you are planning to travel abroad, you may need to put your plans on hold. Due to the IndiGo crisis, fares for both domestic and foreign routes have increased by two to three times.

Delhi To Dubai

One-way trip now costs approximately Rs 55,000. According to data from the online travel firm SNVA Traveltech (Travomint), the airfare on this route was between Rs 18,000 and Rs 22,000 before the recentflight disruptions. This represents a nearly three-fold increase.

Round Trip To Maldives Costs Rs 1 Lakh 

A round trip from Delhi to Male now costs approximately Rs 1 lakh, whereas it used to range between Rs 40,000 and Rs 45,000. This means travelers planning to visit the Maldives will have to spend around Rs 1 lakh just on airfare.

Travel To Canada And Other Nations Becomes Costlier 

Fares on other international routes have also seen steep hikes:

Delhi-Mauritius: A round trip now costs up to Rs 74,000, compared to the previous Rs 40,000– Rs 45,000.

Delhi-Toronto (Canada): A one-way trip now costs up to Rs 1.4 lakh, up from the earlier Rs 1–1.25 lakh.

Mumbai-Dammam (Saudi Arabia): Fares are approximately Rs 36,000 (one way), compared to the previous Rs 18,000– Rs 22,000.

Delhi-Hong Kong: Fares have reached nearly Rs 50,000, whereas they used to be between Rs 40,000 and Rs 45,000.

Expert Insight

Alok K Singh, Chairman and CEO of SNVA Traveltech, stated that despite the limits on airfares, international ticket prices are surging due to ongoing flight disruptions and the low availability of seats.
