In a continued effort to curb immoral activities in the city, police raided two spa centers in a mall on Tuesday night, uncovering an illegal prostitution racket. Three individuals, including an operator, were arrested, and more than 10 women were rescued from the premises.
The raids were conducted at the Omaxe Mall in Sector 50, where two establishments were found to be facilitating prostitution behind closed doors.
Widespread Illegal Network
According to police sources, the issue is not isolated to a single location.
Scope: Over 500 spa centers operate across Gurugram’s four zones. Intelligence suggests that many spas located in large malls, particularly in the DLF area of the eastern region, are engaged in similar illicit trades.
Trafficking: The women rescued on Tuesday included nationals from other countries as well as women from various Indian states. Investigations reveal a pattern of young women being brought to Gurugram for prostitution from states such as Jharkhand, Bengal, Bihar, Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Manipur and Meghalaya.
Drug Trafficking Links
The illegal activities within these centers are not limited to prostitution. Authorities have flagged a growing nexus between spa centers and drug trafficking.
Recent Case: Two months ago, two women working at a spa in a Gurugram mall were arrested for their involvement with a Nigerian gang. They were found to be supplying narcotics to clients.
Public Nuisance At Sikandarpur Metro Station
Residents have raised serious concerns regarding open solicitation near the Sikandarpur Metro Station on MG Road.
The Issue: As evening falls, women gather near the station for prostitution, with activities continuing until 2:00 am.
Resident Impact: Local residents state that these activities are negatively impacting the families living in societies along MG Road and are damaging the area's reputation.
Police Response: While the police conduct intermittent drives, residents feel the action has not been stringent enough to provide a lasting solution.
Recent Crackdowns And History
The city has seen a surge in such raids over the last two years.
Central Plaza Mall (Sector-53): Police uncovered prostitution rackets at 'Brown Spa' and 'The Regal & Wellness Spa Centre,' arresting an operator and three women.
Qutub Plaza Market: DLF Phase-1 police raided 'Unique Spa' and 'Lotus Spa Centre,' detaining eight individuals.
Manesar: Six months ago, a simultaneous operation across four spa centers resulted in the rescue of 17 women.
Overall Statistics: In the past two years alone, raids have been conducted on more than 20 spa centers across various police station jurisdictions where immoral activities were confirmed.
Official Statement
ACP Sushila states, "In the last two years, more than 20 spa centres in the city have been raided, and immoral activities were found to be taking place. Such action will continue through future campaigns."
