Roshani Nadar Malhotra: After a series of deliberate changes at HCL Group, Roshni Nadar Malhotra, the only daughter of HCL founder Shiv Nadar, has cemented her position as India's richest person and the third richest person in the country. After her father recently transferred his 47% stake in HCL Corporation and Vama Sundari Investments (Vama Delhi), she now holds a majority stake in HCL promoter companies.

Early Life and Education

Born in 1982 to Shiv and Kiran Nadar, Roshni grew up in an environment where philanthropy and business coexisted. She earned a bachelor's degree in communications from Northwestern University and an MBA from the Kellogg School of Management. Despite a degree in media and communications, she ventured into technology and business and eventually took a leadership position at HCL.

Became Chairperson Of HCL In 2025

Her rise in the company has been gradual but decisive. In July 2020, she took over from her father as the chairperson of $12 billion global IT giant HCL Technologies. The move marks a generational shift for one of India’s top tech companies.

Succession planning

Shiv Nadar gave Roshni 47% stakes in HCL Corp and VAMA Delhi in two separate gift deeds executed in March 2025. Without changing his total promoter interest in HCL Technologies of 60.814%, the move ensured the stability and family control of the HCL Group. Due to this change, Roshni’s net worth surpassed her father’s, catapulting her to the top of India’s billionaire ranks.

Beyond Business: Roshni’s Global Impact

Roshni Nadar Malhotra heads HCL Technologies and is also actively involved in international education and policy activities. She is a member of the Kellogg School of Management Executive Board for Asia and the Dean's Advisory Council at the MIT School of Engineering. She is also a member of the boards of The Nature Conservancy and the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF).

Her philanthropic efforts through the Shiv Nadar Foundation further her family's mission to transform education, which has played a key role in establishing prestigious educational institutions in India.

Nadar's legacy and a new era for HCL

Roshni Nadar Malhotra will shape the future of HCL with this legacy, ensuring its continued growth, sustainability and international expansion. Her path to becoming the richest woman in India and a major player in business and technology illustrates how corporate leadership has changed in the country's modern economy.
