Root Classic Takes England To 334

The Ben Stokes-led side had scored 334 runs in their first innings on the back of Joe Root's unbeaten knock of 138 runs. It was his first ton in Australia. He had scored a ton after 29 innings in Australia, and he ended his drought in Gabba and scored a brilliant inning. It was his 40th hundred in the longest format and 23rd in WTC. Opener Zak Crawley also gave the visitors a flying start by scoring a gritty knock of 76 runs.

Mitchell Starc was the pick among the Australian bowlers as he took a six-for. He rattled England's batting lineup and took wickets at regular intervals. His six-for helped him to break Wasim Akram's record of taking 414 wickets in this format and became the highest wicket-taker as a left-arm fast bowler.

The visitors had scored 334, and that is more than the average in a day/night Test. The host will bat deep, and that's why it was important for the Ben Stokes-led side to post a mammoth target while batting first. The host batters will be under immense pressure to reduce England's lead, as it will get tough to bat as the match goes on. The Steve Smith-led side is leading the series by 1-0, whereas the visitors will try to win this match in order to level the series in the Gabba.
