England captain Joe Root added another major record to his name as he went past Sachin Tendulkar for the most 50-plus scores in Test cricket during the third Test match against Pakistan at Edgbaston Stadium in Birmingham.

Root reached his 69th Test half-century during England’s chase against Pakistan at Edgbaston. He got to the landmark from 57 balls, bringing up his fifty with a cut through the off side for four.

Tendulkar had held the record with 68 half-centuries, but Root has now moved ahead of the Indian batting great.

Root finished unbeaten on 62 as England comfortably chased down their target of 130. Jordan Cox also remained not out on 59 as England completed the chase in the 25th over.

Root Adds Another Edgbaston Record

The England batter also reached another significant milestone at Edgbaston.

Root became the first batter to score more than 1,000 Test runs at the Birmingham venue. He now has over 1,000 Test runs at four different grounds.

His numbers include 2,203 runs at Lord’s, 1,128 in Manchester and 1,050 at The Oval.

Root Survives Early Scare

Root was unable to get a good start as he edged his first delivery from Razaullah through the slip cordon for four. He then survived another close call when an edge off Abbas flew between the first and second slips, with neither fielder able to get to the ball.

After those early moments of uncertainty, Root settled down and played a controlled innings to guide England towards victory.

Root Delighted With 3-0 Series Win

Root is once again leading England following Ben Stokes’ departure and was pleased with how his team handled what he described as a difficult period.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Root admitted England still have plenty to improve but was happy with the way they completed a 3-0 series victory over Pakistan.

He said the team had dealt well with the uncertainty and pressure around the series and had remained clinical throughout.

Root also believes the result gives England a strong platform ahead of the next phase under new head coach Stephen Fleming.

England End Long Wait For Test Series Win

The victory gave England their first Test series win since 2024. Pakistan, meanwhile, suffered another disappointing result. Their latest defeat was their 16th loss in their last 21 Tests, while they continue to sit at the bottom of the World Test Championship points table.
