India start their ICC Women's World Cup 2025 with a convincing 59-run victory over Sri Lanka in their tournament opener at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati.

Deepti Sharma claims her third wicket! Anushka Sanjeewani falls to a well-executed plan, sweeping a fuller delivery straight to Harmanpreet Kaur at mid-wicket. 

Shree Charani strikes! Harshitha Madavi falls LBW, attempting a cross-batted shot that she missed, and the review confirms the umpire's decision.

India breathe a sigh of relief as Deepti Sharma's perfectly executed yorker dismisses Chamari Athapaththu, thwarting Sri Lanka's captain's aggressive run-chase.

Chamari Athapaththu attacked Deepti Sharma's over with fervour, starting with a six over long-off and following it up with a four through backward point, racking 11 runs from the over.

Sri Lanka's openers, Hasini Perera and Chamari Athapaththu, are off to a cautious start, as they work on setting their eye in for the challenging chase.

Uh oh, not great for India this! Deepti and Amanjot put in the hard yards without really looking to explode, but the rain has arrived, meaning that finish is delayed. India only going at 5.25 and six wickets down, remember. If this pair even gets 5 more overs in that total will look a lot more daunting. Anxious eye in the sky.

50 partnership up in quick time for this pair, and it's with some explosive batting! Amanjot pounces on an overpitched one, and then Deepti sweeps one down leg. Good batting, India recovering well.

Strong start to her innings from Deepti Sharma, counter-punching just to get the score moving again. She has the support of Amanjot, who we know can clear the fence, but the bulk of responsibility will be needed to be taken by Deepti.

The state of this match has changed so much in just 12 deliveries! The fourth wicket in that span of time as the Lankan skipper sends Richa Ghosh packing. It's very, very wide, Richa tries to smack it, but doesn't have balance and rather spoons it to point. That's another soft wicket and Sri Lanka are in total control now!

Timber! Dream spinner's wicket, that one. Jemimah is beaten in the flight and guile, she is tempted into going forward but never reaches the pitch. She takes a poke at it but it turns sharply past her outside edge and she is bowled! Sensational bowling and Sri Lanka are on top now!

Hits it hard but straight to deep mid-wicket, it's a flat one which also needed two chances to be taken cleanly. It's a good catch as Vishmi reacts well on the second attempt.

Playing her fifth World Cup, Harmanpreet, who reserves her best for big tournaments, carries a tournament average of over 50. She smashed a century against England recently and followed it up with a fifty against Australia.

Indian vice-captain Smriti Mandhana will look to establish herself as the enforcer-in-chief in team's batting unit. The left-hander has already struck four ODI centuries, including two back-to-back against Australia, this year. She averages 66.28 with a strike rate of 115.85.

The opening ceremony will be a 30-min programme which is expected to feature Papon, Joi Barua and rock band Shillong Chamber Choir. 

On current form, India will be high on confidence, having recently beaten England in both ODI and T20I series. However, their defeat against England in the warm-up by a massive 150 runs should worry them too.

Along with India, Sri Lanka are the designated co-hosts as they will host 11 round-robin matches, including Pakistan's seven league stage games and the marquee clash against India on October 5.

The upcoming will feature top (8) ranked teams including defending champions Australia England, India, New Zealand, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Pakistan competing against each other in 28 league matches in a round-robin format across four venues in India and one in Colombo for a record prize money of USD 13.88 million.
