India vs Australia 2nd ODI: Virat Kohli will be in action again as India gear up to take on Australia in the second ODI match at the Adelaide Oval on Thursday, October 22. India are already 0-1 down in the three-match series, having suffered a 7-wicket defeat in the rain-hit first match in Perth.

Kohli had a disappointing outing with the bat in Perth as he was dismissed for 0 by Mitchell Starc. The series marked his return to international cricket after a few months. Ahead of the Perth ODI, His last international appearance for India in the format was the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 against New Zealand. The senior batter made a big impact with a memorable century against Pakistan and an incredible effort against Australia as India went on to lift the title in the UAE.

As India aim to produce an improved effort in order to remain alive in the series, Kohli will have the opportunity to surpass former skipper MS Dhoni's record for the most runs scored by an Indian batter in the 50-over format at Adelaide Oval.

Dhoni has scored 262 runs at an average of 131 from six innings, including three half-centuries. With 244 runs from just four innings at an average of 61, including two hundreds, Kohli is right behind. To write history at Adelaide Oval, Kohli has to score 19 more runs. Kohli's final appearance at the iconic venue came in 2019, when he scored 104 runs from 112 balls as captain, including five fours and two sixes.

The right-handed batter will also have the chance to climb the list of non-Australian batters who have scored the most ODI runs at Adelaide Oval. Mahela Jayawardene, the former captain of Sri Lanka, is in first place with 439 runs at an average of 43.90 from 11 ODIs.

Interestingly, the hosts, Australia, are expected to see the return of star spinner Adam Zampa. Zampa, who has caused the 36-year-old more problems in the format, was unable to participate in the first ODI due to personal reasons. He will likely play in Adelaide in place of left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann. In 22 ODIs, the seasoned leg-spinner dismissed Kohli six times.
