Fortune smiled on Gill when Liam Dawson spilt a chance at a backwards point off Brydon Carse on 46. Gill's half-century was a masterclass in strokeplay as his innings displayed a perfect blend of straight drives and cover drives.
The India captain was particularly impressive in the 17th over, smoking a glorious cover drive and a graceful uppercut off Jofra Archer before following it up by dispatching Brydon Carse's bowling over the line.
Earlier, in the morning session, India made a fateful start to their second innings after England captain Ben Stokes smashed a stroke-filled century following his five-wicket haul to help England take a massive 311-run lead.
With England posting a colossal 669 in the morning session, India arrived roughly 20 minutes before lunch was called.
