Fortune smiled on Gill when Liam Dawson spilt a chance at a backwards point off Brydon Carse on 46. Gill's half-century was a masterclass in strokeplay as his innings displayed a perfect blend of straight drives and cover drives.

The India captain was particularly impressive in the 17th over, smoking a glorious cover drive and a graceful uppercut off Jofra Archer before following it up by dispatching Brydon Carse's bowling over the line.
