India's Highest Successful Run Chase In Test Cricket: India will need a miraculous effort to bounce back and register a famous win in the ongoing second Test against South Africa in Guwahati. They need 549 runs to win the second Test and level the two-match series. The Proteas declared their second innings on 260/5 during the final session of the fourth day of the match.

Notably, the highest 4th innings total chased down by India came way back in 1976 in Port of Spain when they successfully chased down a 403-run target against the West Indies. However, they haven't managed to chase anything over 400 at home. The highest successful chase at home is 387/4, which came against England in 2008. The second-best chase for Team India in India is 276/5 against West Indies in 2011 at Delhi, and the third-highest is 262/5 against New Zealand at Bengaluru in 2012.

This is only the second time that India have been set a 500-plus target in a home Test, after Australia had set them 543 to win in Nagpur in 2004. India lost that game by 342 runs, which remains their biggest defeat in terms of runs in the longest format of the game.

While India aim to produce an unprecedented effort in just more than three sessions, no team has ever chased a 400-plus total to win a Test match in Asia, the highest successful one being 395 by WI vs BAN in Chattogram in 2021. The highest in India is 387 by the hosts against England in Chennai in 2008. Only once in the 21st century have India batted out more than 100 overs in the fourth innings to save a Test match - against Australia in Sydney in 2021 (131 overs).
