Following these retentions, CSK will be left with ₹55 crore for more signings and will also retain one Right-to-Match (RTM) card, letting them to bid for a removed player during the auction.

The 43-year-old legendary batter is anticipated to be retained by CSK as an uncapped player, thanks to a revised IPL rule. Having last played for India in the 2019 ODI World Cup, Dhoni fulfils this criteria, allowing CSK to retain him under the uncapped rule.

Teams can retain up to six players, comprising five capped internationals and two uncapped players.

Earlier, Dhoni fueled speculation about his Indian Premier League (IPL) future by describing his wish to savour the remaining years of his cricketing career.

"I just want to enjoy whatever last few years of cricket I'm able to play," a report in ESPNcricinfo quoted Dhoni as saying on Sunday at a promotional event held in Goa a couple of days ago.

"Like how during our childhood we used to go out and play at 4[pm], just enjoying the game. But when you play professional sport it becomes difficult to enjoy the game just like a game. So what I want to do is, there are emotions and commitments, but I want to enjoy the game for the next few years," he added.
