Ireland's hopes of qualifying directly for the 2027 ICC Men's ODI World Cup have officially ended after the first ODI against Afghanistan in Bready was abandoned because of persistent rain. Not a single ball was bowled, leaving Ireland with no chance of securing automatic qualification.

Before the match, Ireland still had a very slim chance of making it directly to the World Cup. They needed to defeat Afghanistan 5-0 in the ODI series and also hoped that the West Indies would lose both of their remaining ODIs against India. Only then could Ireland have moved ahead of Afghanistan, West Indies and Zimbabwe in the ICC ODI rankings before the September 30, 2026 cut-off date.

How can Ireland still feature in the ODI World Cup 2027?

However, the washout ended those hopes. Ireland, who are currently 12th in the ODI rankings, must now take the longer qualification route through the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Qualifier.

The Qualifier will feature 10 teams, with only the winners earning a direct place in the 12-team ODI World Cup. The teams finishing second, third and fourth will move into the World Cup Super Series, where they will compete for the final available spot in the tournament.

The Qualifier will include the two lowest-ranked Full Member nations in the ODI rankings, excluding hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe. They will be joined by the top four teams from the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 and four more teams that qualify through the World Cup Qualifier Playoff.

The Playoff tournament will feature the bottom four teams from League 2 along with four teams from the Challenge League. The top four sides from the Playoff will then progress to the main World Cup Qualifier.

Meanwhile, the Challenge League consists of 12 teams divided into two groups of six. Each group plays three round-robin tournaments during the qualification cycle, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the Playoff.

Ireland will now be hoping to avoid another disappointing qualification campaign. They also missed out on the 2023 ODI World Cup after being knocked out in the Super Six stage of the Qualifier, falling short of a place in the main event once again.
