Batting stalwart Virat Kohli continues to score runs and hit centuries in ODI cricket, remaining one of India’s most reliable batters. However, India will need contributions from the entire team if they want to lift the 2027 ODI World Cup trophy.
The tournament will be co-hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia in October and November 2027. With the conditions expected to test the players, India cannot depend on Kohli alone to deliver with the bat.
India have plenty of batting options to choose from. Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul and Ishan Kishan are among the players who can strengthen the batting line-up. Experienced campaigners Rohit Sharma and Kohli will also be crucial to India’s chances.
The team has several all-rounders, including Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Nitish Reddy. Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad are also among the backup options.
However, India’s pace attack remains a concern, with Jasprit Bumrah the most certain name in the playing XI.
Mohammad Kaif Wants More Batters To Step Up
Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif believes Rohit and Kohli can perform well in South African conditions. However, he feels the other players must also contribute if India are to challenge for the title.
“One player will not win you the World Cup abroad, Kohli is the main player, but a lot of others will need to help,” Kaif was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
Kaif pointed to India’s 2003 ODI World Cup campaign to explain why contributions from across the team are important. India reached the final that year, with several batters and bowlers playing key roles alongside Sachin Tendulkar.
How India’s Players Supported Sachin Tendulkar In 2003
Tendulkar finished the 2003 World Cup as the tournament’s leading run-scorer, scoring 673 runs in 11 innings. Sourav Ganguly followed him with 465 runs, while Rahul Dravid scored 318 runs at an average of 63.60. Virender Sehwag also made a valuable contribution, scoring 299 runs.
India’s bowling attack played an equally important role during the tournament. Zaheer Khan finished with 18 wickets, making him the fourth-highest wicket-taker in the competition. Javagal Srinath picked up 16 wickets, while Ashish Nehra claimed 15.
These performances helped India reach the final, where they eventually lost to Australia. Kaif believes the team’s collective effort was a major reason behind its successful campaign.
Kaif Credits Ganguly’s Captaincy And Team Effort
Kaif recalled how several players stepped up at important moments during the 2003 World Cup. He highlighted the contributions of Yuvraj Singh, Dravid, Sehwag and the bowlers, while also praising Ganguly’s leadership.
“Tendulkar was our main batter, but if you check the matches, others also contributed. Yuvraj (Singh) got important runs, I got an unbeaten half-century against New Zealand, Rahul Dravid’s runs were there, Virender Sehwag’s runs, Ashish Nehra’s match-winning spell against England, Zaheer Khan bowled good spells, Javagal Srinath was our senior bowler. Ganguly’s captaincy was excellent, a lot of credit goes to him,” Kaif said.
India will hope to see a similar team effort in 2027. Kohli and Rohit could play important roles, but consistent performances from the other batters and a strong bowling attack will also be necessary if India are to win the World Cup.
