Manav Suthar Stars With Six Wickets on Debut, India Enforce Follow-On After Afghanistan Fold For 152

Young left-arm spinner Manav Suthar made a dream start to his Test career by claiming a five-wicket haul in the one-off Test against Afghanistan at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur on Monday.

The 22-year-old finished with impressive figures of 6 for 33 from 22 overs, becoming only the 10th Indian bowler and the seventh spinner from the country to take a five-for on Test debut.

Suthar’s performance also earned him a place among the best bowling figures by an Indian in a debut Test innings. His figures of 6/33 are jointly the second-best by an Indian on Test debut. Apart from his heroics with the ball, he also contributed 28 valuable runs with the bat.

Only former spinner Narendra Hirwani has recorded better figures on Test debut for India. Hirwani famously picked up 8/61 and 8/75 against the West Indies in Chennai in 1988.

India bundled out Afghanistan for 152

India enforced the follow-on after bowling out Afghanistan for 152 in their first innings on day three of the one-off Test here on Monday.

Resuming the day at 113 for five, Afghanistan could only add 39 runs to their overnight total. The visitors still trail India by 412 runs.

Manav Suthar ended with dream figures of six for 33 in 22 overs on debut.

India had declared their first innings for 564 for eight.

India tightened its grip on the one-off Test against Afghanistan by enforcing the follow-on after dismissing the visitors for just 152 in their first innings on the third day in Mullanpur on Monday.

Afghanistan resumed the morning at 113 for five but failed to put up much resistance, adding only 39 more runs before being bowled out. As a result, they were left trailing India by a massive 412 runs.

Making his Test debut, left-arm spinner Manav Suthar was the standout performer with the ball. The youngster produced an excellent spell, returning figures of 6 for 33 from 22 overs to put India firmly in control of the match.

Earlier, India had piled up a huge first-innings total of 564 for eight before declaring, leaving Afghanistan with a mountain to climb.
