Ashes 2025-26: Former England batter Joe Root finally overcame the curse of 'not having a test hundred' in Australia with a fine Test century on Day 1 of the Brisbane Test. Fans experienced a special knock from Root, which came under floodlights, which is generally the most difficult time to bat.
Root commanded a huge 'roar' from the England fans after he flicked Scott Boland for four down the leg-side to complete his 40th test ton in 181 balls. As soon as Root completed his hundred, congratulatory wishes started pouring in for the legendary batter. Amidst all the other wishes, there was a special wish from former Australian batter and commentator, Matthew Hayden.
While speaking on the All Over Bar the Cricket podcast on YouTube in September, Hayden then dared to walk naked if Root failed to get a hundred in Australia, saying, "I will walk nude around the MCG if he doesn't make a hundred this summer."

"Good day, Joe. Congratulations, mate, on the hundred here in Australia. Took you a while, and there was no one that had more skin in the game than me, literally. I was backing you in for the hundred in a good way. So mate, congratulations 10, 50s and finally 100. You little ripper, mate. Have a beauty and bloody enjoy it," Haydos said in a video posted by England Cricket on their official 'X' handle.

Former England captain and legendary batter Alastair Cook took a swipe at former Australian players after the ton. "Even Australians have to admit he is a great now,"
The 34-year-old's previous high score from his 16 Ashes tests in Australia was 89 coming into Brisbane.

Root's hundred helped dig England out of early trouble when they were five for two in the third over in the pink-ball test at the Gabba after two Mitchell Starc wickets.
