Former India cricketer Parthiv Patel has been making headlines amid reports that he could replace Ajit Agarkar as the next chairman of the BCCI selection committee. Agarkar’s tenure is set to end in September, and Dainik Jagran had earlier reported that it would not be extended, with Parthiv emerging as a frontrunner for the role.

Amid the ongoing speculation, Parthiv shared a post on X featuring the words “Coming Soon” alongside a graphic of a cricket field. The post quickly went viral, prompting fans to speculate about his next role. While some believe he could become the next chief selector, others have linked the post to a possible coaching position.

The speculation comes just days after a BCCI review meeting in Mumbai, which Agarkar reportedly did not attend. The meeting was attended by India head coach Gautam Gambhir, Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill, T20I captain Shreyas Iyer, and Centre of
Excellence head VVS Laxman.

Parthiv Patel's cricketing career

Parthiv Patel made his Test debut against England at Trent Bridge in 2002, at the age of 17 years and 153 days, becoming the youngest Test wicketkeeper at the time. He went on to represent India in 25 Tests, 38 ODIs and two T20Is. After spending several years out of the national team, he made a surprise return to Test cricket against England in 2016. Parthiv announced his retirement from all forms of cricket in December 2020.

In domestic cricket, Parthiv led Gujarat to their maiden Ranji Trophy title in the 2016–17 season. He also played for six different IPL franchises during his career, including Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians. He featured in 139 IPL matches, 194 first-class matches, 193 List A matches and 204 domestic T20 games, including his IPL appearances.

 

BCCI Chief Selector Eligibility Criteria

According to the eligibility requirements, candidates applying for the chief selector's position must meet the following conditions:

  • Retirement Requirement: The applicant must have retired from all forms of cricket at least five years ago.
  • Playing Experience: The candidate must meet at least one of the following criteria:
  • Played at least seven Test matches.
  • Played at least 30 first-class matches.
  • Played at least 10 ODIs and 20 first-class matches.
