After the dismal performance in the ODI World Cup, South Africa captain Temba Bavuma and pacer Kagiso Rabada have been dropped from the upcoming white-ball series against India, starting on December 10.
India's tour of South Africa will include three T20Is, three ODIs and two Test matches. Both Bavuma and Rabada will return for the Tests while Aiden Markram will lead the side in the while-ball series.
The uncapped trio of Mihlali Mpongwana, David Bedingham, and Nandre Burger have received their maiden national call-ups. Pacer Burger has been picked for all three formats while batter Bedingham has been named in the Test squad. Mpongwana, an all-rounder who performed admirably in the final of a Division 1 competition in October, has been included in the ODI squad.
Tristan Stubbs has been named in South Africa's Test team for the first time. The 23-year-old has previously represented South Africa in ODIs and T20Is, struck a century for South Africa A against Sri Lanka earlier this year, and established himself in red-ball cricket.
Furthermore, wicket-keeper Kyle Verreynne has been recalled to the ODI and Test squads after last appearing in a Test against Australia earlier this year.
Gerald Coetzee, Marco Jansen, and Lungi Ngidi will miss the third T20I and ODI series and will join Bavuma and Rabada in a set of first-class matches before the start of the Test series.

Pacer Lizaad Williams had a groin strain in a first-class match against Province last weekend. He will have more medical tests to evaluate the degree of his injuries. Meanwhile, Anrich Nortje (lower back stress fracture) and Wayne Parnell (left shoulder) were not considered for selection due to injury rehabilitation.

“We are excited to announce the latest squad of players who will represent the Proteas in white-ball cricket against India in the coming weeks. After an excellent overall showing at the recently concluded ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, we want to capitalise on that momentum and continue building on our core group during this Freedom Series," limited-overs head coach Rob Walter said.
“We have a busy summer ahead starting with the T20Is and then ODIs against India and we have therefore taken the decision to omit several of our senior players. This decision was taken together with coach Shukri as we place emphasis on the red-ball leg of the tour meaning they will instead be preparing for the Test series by playing domestic cricket. In saying that, the move has presented opportunities for others that have been performing well on domestic level to be drafted in," he added.
