Shubman Gill Injury Update: India's Test and ODI captain Shubman Gill might have already played his last game this year as he is set to be out of action for a while due to a neck injury, which is said to be worse than it looks. Gill is not playing the ongoing second Test against South Africa as he was released from the squad.
Gill picked up a neck issue during the first Test against the Proteas in Kolkata. After getting retired hurt in the first innings, the skipper remained out for the rest of the match. He was subsequently stretchered off to a local hospital, where he was kept under observation for a day before being discharged.
As India gear up for further assignments, including the white-ball series against South Africa, multiple reports claim that Gill could miss the remainder of 2025 due to what appears to be a nerve injury for which he has been given an injection to "alleviate his symptoms".

After getting discharged from the Woodlands Hospital, Gill travelled with the team for the Guwahati Test, but he wasn’t picked in the playing XI, having been ruled out of action on the eve of the match. Gill flew to Mumbai, where he consulted spinal injury specialist Dr Abhay Nene. The medical report has been forwarded to BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar.
Gill Suffers Nerve Injury
A report in The Times of India has claimed that the 26-year-old Gill has a nerve injury and the team management isn’t might not rush his comeback given the T20 World Cup in February-March next year.
Meanwhile, the right-handed batter could likely return for the New Zealand series that starts from January 11 next year. Before going under his rehabilitation, Gill will have to undergo a period of rest, and he is all set to be unavailable for the five-match T20I series against South Africa as well.
"Shubman is getting well slowly, slowly. He was very eager to play the match. But at the same time, his body didn't allow it. He's going to come back stronger," Pant, who is captaining India in the Guwahati Test, said about Gill's injury.
In Gill's absence, all eyes will be on India's ODI squad for the South Africa series as Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul remain in contention for the stand-in captaincy role for the three-match series.
