Delhi Airport Terminal 2: Union Minister K Rammohan Naidu inaugurated Delhi’s renovated Terminal 2 on Saturday, October 25. The airport is expected to be operational from Sunday, October 26. “India can become one of the world’s largest civil aviation ecosystems,” Naidu said at the inaugural function.
The T2 has an annual capacity to handle 15 million passengers. The civil aviation minister said that the entire transfer system for such a huge load of passengers must be made more efficient so that the airport matches the standard of an international airport. “The airport can have an annual passenger handling capacity of around 130 million with efficient use of space,” Naidu added.
Naidu further said that the Delhi airport is focusing on sustainability, including the specialised use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
When Was T2 Built?
The T2 was built by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) 40 years ago. However, it was shut this year in April for renovation works.
The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA), located in the national capital, is the largest in the country. The airport has three terminals, T1, T2 and T3, along with four runways. The airport handles more than 1,300 flights daily. Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) CEO Videh Kumar Japuriar said, "The airport has an annual passenger handling capacity of over 100 million."
All three terminals of the IGIA are currently operated by the DIAL. On March 20, DIAL said the expanded T1 can accommodate 40 million passengers, and T3 can handle 45 million passengers annually.
What Is New In T2?
- The renovated airport of Terminal 2 will have self-baggage drop facilities for passengers to quickly check in their baggage without waiting in the queue.
- Six new passenger boarding bridges (PBBs) with an automatic docking system have been introduced.
- All the entry gates will have the DigiYatra facility, allowing passengers to pass checkpoints by a simple face scan.
- To give an aesthetic touch to the airport, T2 will have modern ceilings and skylight designs, giving it a bright and spacious look.
- Wait time trackers giving real-time updates of flight timings has been installed at key checkpoints.
- A new Flight Information Display System (FIDS) has been installed, making it easier for passengers to track their flight.
- Safety features like advanced fire safety measures have been improved in the new T2 terminal.
