The Delhi government is preparing to revise the circle rates for agricultural land in Delhi after 17 years. Farmers have proposed that the new circle rates be fixed between Rs 8.5 crore and Rs 10 crore per acre, citing steep inflation and years of government neglect.
The deadline for submitting suggestions ended on October 15. Currently, the circle rate for agricultural land in Delhi stands at Rs 53 lakh per acre, unchanged since 2008. Over 200 villages in the capital continue to practise farming, with more than 50,000 acres of land still under cultivation.
According to officials, residents from several villages have sent proposals recommending circle rates between Rs 5 crore and Rs 10 crore per acre. The Delhi Panchayat Sangh has urged the government to raise the rate to Rs 10 crore per acre for all types of farmland, whether riverine, barren, or cultivated, to ensure uniformity and fairness. Its president, Thaan Singh Yadav, said a uniform rate would help farmers get the respect and compensation they deserve in the national capital.
The Sangh also suggested keeping the circle rate for residential land in rural areas minimal, arguing that this would increase the overall value of land for farmers and help them achieve financial stability.
Meanwhile, 12 villages in outer Delhi have appealed to the government to consider a letter submitted by the North West Delhi District Magistrate’s office, in which landowners sought compensation for land acquired by the Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL).

Highlighting farmers’ long-pending concerns, Paras Tyagi, Founder of the Centre for Youth, Culture, Law and Environment, said, “A great injustice has been done to the farmers of Delhi over the past few years. The circle rate for agricultural land has not been revised since 2008, while inflation has risen sharply. The government must take into account the concerns expressed by farmers during the October 17 meeting at the ADM’s office regarding land acquisition by PGCIL.”
