First Digital Literate State in India: We are living in a modern era, which is more digitally awakened than ever before. Nowadays, almost everything is at your fingertips. People spend most of their time behind screens. India, being on a spree of development and growth, is also no less. The nation of billions stands shoulder to shoulder with the world. India possesses one of the largest consumer bases of smartphones and the Internet. The government initiatives, like Digital India and more, are also working toward making India digitally literate for the country's overall development. However, do you know that one Indian state has finally acquired the title of First Fully Digitally Literate State of India?

Which Is The First Fully 'Digitally' Literate State Of India

Kerala is the first 'fully' 'digitally' literate state of India. This was formally announced in August 2025 by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Following the success of the government-led ‘Digi Kerala’ initiative. The initiative was focused on training people across the state to make voice-video calls using smartphones, access government services online, carry out Internet banking, and use social media platforms. In the campaign, over 21 lakh people were identified as ‘digitally illiterate’, out of which 99.98% were successfully trained and passed the evaluations, as per the Government of Kerala.

Kerala's initiative was focused on training individuals of all ages, students, housewives, farmers, and even the elderly. As per reports, out of these 21 lakh people, more than 15,000 were senior citizens over 90.

Kerala’s announcement as the first digitally literate state is a stepping stone to building a knowledge economy. It shows how digital empowerment can narrow the gap between urban and rural populations.
