Diwali Kajal Significance: Application of kajal (kohl) on the next morning of Diwali is a practice followed by most Hindus. Applying the home-made kajal from the earthen Diwali puja diya has its deep spiritual and symbolic roots. This homemade kajal is used on either the next morning of Diwali or on the night of Diwali after Goddess Lakshmi and God Ganesha puja (worship). The usage of this Homemade kohl is not cosmetic, but deep-rooted with the spirit of Diwali, which is victory over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and good over evil.

In Hindu tradition, kajal is regarded as a protective shield. It has traditionally been applied to the eyes to protect against the evil eye and evil energies. During Diwali, the devotees start fresh, rejuvenate themselves, and the usage of kajal represents purifying the eyes to view the world clearly and purely with lots of hope in their eyes.

Diwali is also linked to the Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity and wealth. Kajal is applied to seek her divine protection, wisdom, and prosperity on the occasion of the Hindu New Year.

How To Make Homemade Kajal The Day After Diwali?

1. Use the earthen lamp (diya) that is used during Lakshmi Puja (akhand jyot) and is kept burning overnight.

2. After the puja, put an inverted clean steel bowl over the diya, carefully, so it does not touch the wick or flame.

3. Let the soot and smoke of the burning ghee or oil deposit on the plate's underside or bowl.

4. After a few minutes, remove the plate or bowl softly. Scrape the black soot with a clean spoon.

5. Add a few drops of fresh desi ghee, and your homemade, prosperous kajal is ready to use. Use only a little.

In short, your mother applying kajal on Diwali morning is considered a sacred ritual that keeps negativity away and brings the divine blessings of God Ganesha and Maa Lakshmi into your and your loved ones' lives. This homemade Kajal is also considered a better option than a chemical-based Kohl.
