In response to the recent flooding incident at a Rajinder Nagar coaching center that led to the deaths of three UPSC aspirants, the Delhi government has issued comprehensive safety guidelines for schools across the city. Released by the Directorate of Education (DoE), these new directives are designed to enhance the safety and security of students in both private and government-run schools.
The guidelines stress the need for strict adherence to the Master Plan for Delhi, especially regarding the use of basements in public buildings. School authorities have been directed to implement all necessary precautions to prevent waterlogging on and around their premises. The circular underscores the urgency of these measures, citing the tragic incident in which a Civil Services aspirant lost his life due to electrocution.
Principals are now required to ensure that basements are used only for activities permitted by the Master Plan and the school's approved plan. Moreover, all school gates must remain operational for both entry and exit and access to basements must be clearly marked and incorporated into the school's evacuation plan.

The circular also requires regular inspections of school corridors and staircases for water accumulation, with quick action needed to address any issues. Moreover, electrical wiring and appliances must be checked to ensure they meet safety standards, and all schools must implement the necessary fire safety measures.
