The Delhi University (DU) has announced a new initiative that enables students to pursue two degree programs at the same time. This decision aims to provide greater flexibility and opportunities for academic growth among students.

Dual Degree Structure

Under this initiative, students must enroll in one-degree program in a regular mode from any DU college or department. The second degree must be pursued through the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) mode from the School of Open Learning.

Eligibility Criteria

According to the notification, students who are currently enrolled or in the process of enrolling in a degree program at DU can opt for this dual degree option. However, they are prohibited from pursuing two similar academic programs concurrently, such as BCom (Hons) and BCom (Pass), even if one is taken in the ODL format. It is important to note that these guidelines are applicable only to students enrolled in programs other than the PhD.

Academic Requirements

Students opting for dual degrees will be required to fulfill all academic requirements for both programs independently. This includes:

- Attending classes
- Completing internal assessments
- Submitting assignments
- Giving presentations
- Meeting promotion criteria for each degree

To prevent redundancy in mandatory courses, students must complete the compulsory courses for the program they enrolled in first, whether in regular or ODL mode.

Course Substitution

The notification clarifies that corresponding mandatory courses in the second program will be substituted with appropriate alternatives. For example, if a student first enrolls in a regular program, they must complete the mandatory courses for that program. Conversely, if they begin with an ODL program, the compulsory courses for that program will take precedence.

Undergraduate Program Requirements

For undergraduate programs, students must complete mandatory courses like Environmental Science (EVS) or Ability Enhancement Courses (AEC) for their first enrolled program. If these courses are also required in the second degree program, they will be replaced with suitable alternatives.

For instance, a student pursuing two undergraduate degrees will study the AEC language and EVS courses as part of their regular program. For the second ODL degree, they may either choose a different AEC language or select a Skill Enhancement Course (SEC) or a Value Addition Course (VAC).

Elective Courses and Project Work

In the case of students pursuing two BA programs, instead of repeating a generic elective (language) course, they can select courses from the open generic elective (GE) pool to avoid duplication. Moreover, the research theme or project work required in the fourth year of the undergraduate program must be distinct for each degree pursued.

It is essential to note that students will not be allowed to combine credits earned from the two different programs to obtain a major or minor in any discipline.
