Who are Garud Commandos?: Garud Commandos played an important role when Operation Sindoor happened, where Garud snipers neutralised various Pakistani drones. They played a vital role in the special operations and wars. The Indian Air Force's (IAF) Garud Commandos act as bravest warriors in various special operations. Garud Commandos was established in 2004 to bridge a valuable gap in the Indian Air Force’s operational capabilities, this elite unit focuses on protecting vital air force installations, executing high-risk missions, and conducting rescue operations. They got their name from the mythical divine bird Garuda, which symbolish speed and strength.
A Force Forged In Fire:
The Garud Commandos are one of the strongest and versatile forces in the Indian Air Force (IAF), trained with a variety of duties and responsibilities. The Commandos responsibilities range from handling terrorism and providing hostage rescue to combat search and rescue (CSAR). They were the ones who played a vital role during Operation Sindoor. The culmination of the Garud Commandos training is celebrated in the Maroon Beret Ceremonial Parade, which is considered as a significant event where newly passed-out trainees officially enter the Indian Air Force. During this event, the Garuds showcase their talent and what they have learned throughout years.
Garud Commandos’Selection Process:
The Indian Air Force recruits Garud Commandos through two different selection processes such as Airmen (non-commissioned) and Commissioned Officers. Both of the recruitment stages involve dedicated training and hardwork, elimination-based processes aimed at selecting only those candidates who are capable of handling the position.
Airmen (Non-Commissioned Entry):
The airmen recruitment is conducted through Airmen Selection Centres across India. The selection process for the Airmen Recruitment includes:
1. Notification Released: TheIndian Air Force published the official advertisements inviting applications for the Airmen Posts.
2. Physical Tests: The candidates must clear every stage to move further and in this stage they must clear endurance exercises such as running, push-ups, and sit-ups.
3. Psychological Screening: In this stage, candidates have to go through assessment test resilience, adaptability, and mental strength.
4. Interview Round: This is the last stage of recruitment, candidates will be evaluated on their motivation, teamwork as well as commitment.

Commissioned Officers:
1. AFCAT Examination: This recruitment examination tests general awareness, reasoning, and technical knowledge of the candidates.
2. Training at AFA, Dundigal: The selected candidates will be eligible to join the Ground Duty Officer Course to build and understand military leadership abilities.
The candidate must note that failure at any recruitment stage leads to permanent disqualification from the whole recruitment process, ensuring that only determined candidates move ahead in the next round.
Once the selection process concludes, shortlisted candidates have to undergo a 72-week training, which is one of the longest and most dedicated training among all Indian special forces. It covers a broad spectrum of abilities, from parachute jumps, survival techniques in diverse conditions, advanced weapon tackling, and high-altitude operations and war- like situations.
