J&K School Holiday Tomorrow: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that an active western disturbance is likely to bring widespread rain and snowfall to Jammu and Kashmir. The disturbance is expected to remain active from Sunday evening until Tuesday (October 7), bringing heavy rain, lightning, hailstorms, and strong winds to many areas of Jammu and Kashmir.
Heavy Weather Alert Issued:
Mukhtar Ahmed, director of the Srinagar Meteorological Center, stated that moderate to heavy snowfall is expected in the higher reaches, while heavy rain is expected in the plains of the Jammu division. The heaviest rainfall is expected between Sunday evening and Tuesday afternoon.
Schools Closed for Safety:
Following the IMD warning, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has directed all departments to remain on high alert. As a precautionary measure, the Jammu-based Directorate of School Education has ordered the closure of all government and private schools on October 6 and 7 to ensure the safety of students.
Disaster Response Increased:
Recent floods and cloudbursts in the region have claimed 155 lives and caused extensive property damage, prompting the Disaster Management, Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Department to step up its vigil. Officials in Srinagar, Pulwama, and other districts have also urged residents to stay indoors and avoid going to hilly areas or water bodies.

Major Highways Face Closure:
Heavy snowfall is expected in mountainous areas such as Pahalgam, Sinthan Pass (Kokernag), Pir Ki Gali (Shopian), Zojila (Sonamarg), Razdan Pass (Bandipora), Gulmarg, and Sadhna Pass (Kupwara). Authorities have warned that major highways connecting these areas may be temporarily closed due to snow accumulation.
