MP NEET Exam: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has announced a five percent reservation in medical colleges for students from government schools, starting this year. The Chief Minister asserted that government school students faced challenges in pursuing medical education following the implementation of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET).
"For the first time in the country, the Madhya Pradesh government has made a decision, effective from this year, to provide five per cent reservation to children from government schools for medical studies. Only government school students will be eligible for admission to these seats," said the chief minister as quoted by news agency PTI.
"Until now, only students from private schools used to clear NEET. However, starting now, two lists will be prepared: one for government school students and another for those from private schools," he added.
Moreover, he emphasised the significance of offering opportunities to children from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Chouhan made this declaration during his speech at an event in Jabalpur, which was organised to commemorate the sacrifice of tribal heroes from the 1857 uprising, King Shankarshah and his son Kunwar Raghunath Shah.
The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) conducts the counselling process for 15 per cent of All India Quota (AIQ) seats in government medical colleges and 100 per cent of seats in deemed and central universities. On the other hand, the counselling for 85 per cent of state quota medical seats is conducted by the state authorities.
