Tamil Nadu Rains: As torrential downpours battered the coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, authorities in many districts declared a holiday for schools. All schools in Chennai and Tiruvallur districts will be closed on Wednesday, November 15, due to continuous heavy rainfall, an official said on Tuesday.

"Holiday declared for all schools in Chennai District on November 15, due to continuous heavy rainfall in the district," Rashmi Siddharth Zagade, a District Collector said as quoted by ANI. Tiruvallur District Collector Dr T Prabhushankar also declared a holiday for all schools in the region on Wednesday.

On Monday the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert and predicted isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall in the coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on November 14.

Schools in Ariyalur, Tanjore, Thanjavur, Villupuram, Tiruvannamalai, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Pondicherry/Kariakkal, Mayiladuthurai, and Cuddalore were closed due to the persistent rain that pounded these areas on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, normal life was affected in Puducherry today due to heavy rains. The roads appeared almost deserted, with very few cars. Due to the squally weather and intermittent rainfall, Puducherry Home Minister A Namassivayam announced that all schools and colleges in the Puducherry and Karaikal regions will be closed today.

Tamil Nadu Weather Updates: IMD Predicts More Rain

Deputy Director General of the Regional Meteorological Centre S Balachandran stated that heavy rains would persist for the next two days in the coastal regions and certain interior areas. He also informed that there would be moderate to heavy rainfall in Chennai and its suburbs over the next few days.

"From October 1 till date, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal region received 23 cm rainfall, which is 14 per cent less than the normal rainfall during the North-East Monsoon (NEM) period. Despite this, it can be said the region received near normal rainfall," Balachandran said as quoted by PTI.
