The University Grants Commission (UGC) has introduced a new curriculum and credit framework for postgraduate programs, focusing on flexibility and mobility. Unlike previous norms, the framework does not mandate discipline-specific prerequisites for admission to one-year or two-year PG programs. It permits students enrolled in the two-year program to exit after completing the first year.
As part of its efforts to reform postgraduate education, the UGC aims to provide students with increased autonomy and flexibility in their academic journeys. The initiative outlines the credit system and curriculum content for both one-year and two-year programmes, allowing students enrolled in the latter to exit after completing the first year.
"The framework, with no discipline-specific entry requirements, outlines the credits and academic structure for both one-year and two-year PG programmes. It provides an exit option after the first year in the two-year programme. Flexibility and mobility are its key features," stated UGC chairman M Jagadesh Kumar.
The framework is in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which urges universities to design restructured degree programs that emulate the flexibility observed in undergraduate education.

Eligibility Criteria
"A student is eligible for a PG programme in a discipline corresponding to either a major or minor(s) discipline in the UG programme. In this case, the university can admit students to the PG programme based on the student's performance in the UG programme or through an entrance examination," as mentioned in the UGC PG programme framework.
Eligibility for admission to postgraduate (PG) programs depends on the completion of relevant undergraduate (UG) majors or minors. Admission criteria usually include evaluating performance in UG courses or through national or university-level entrance examinations.
Postgraduate Education Multiple Strategies:
- A two-year research-focused program for graduates of three-year Bachelor's programs.
- A one-year PG program for graduates of four-year Bachelor's programs with honors or research backgrounds.
-Integrated five-year Bachelor's/Master's programs are also recommended.
-Universities are encouraged to introduce PG programs in fundamental disciplines such as Machine Learning and interdisciplinary fields.
