DK Suresh, Congress MP from Bangalore Rural and brother of Karnataka party president DK Shivakumar, entered the fray from the Kanakapura segment as a Congress candidate on the last day for filing nomination. His brother and Congress leader Shivakumar had already filed his nomination from the same constituency on April 17. The surprising move from Suresh came as a safeguard in case of rejection of any nomination of Congress candidates after scrutiny.
The filing of nomination papers for upcoming Assembly elections in Karnataka ended on Thursday. Most of the candidates held road shows and rallies before filing nominations. The filing nominations process began on April 13 and ended with a surprise move by DK Suresh on April 20. The papers will be scrutinised today and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is April 24.

The 60-year-old, Shivakumar is the official candidate from Kanakapura. He has been elected from this constituency in the last three state elections in 2008, 2013 and 2018. In the upcoming 2023 Karnataka Assembly Election, Shivakumar to face R Ashoka, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate from Kanakapura.
Political parties frequently field a backup candidate who drops out of the election once the returning officer has officially approved the primary contender's paperwork. DK Suresh’s nomination has been filed as a precautionary measure, said Shivakumar.
Who Is DK Suresh
The 57-year-old is the Congress MP from Karnataka in the Lok Sabha. He represents the Bangalore Rural seat. The Kanakapura assembly segment is one of the eight assembly segments of the Bangalore Rural seat.
He is the younger brother of DK Shivakumar and the noted Congress leader. Suresh won his first election in 2013 contesting from the Bangalore Rural seat. The by-polls were held when sitting MP HD Kumaraswamy resigned from his position.
Karnataka Assembly Election 2023
The election on 224 assembly seats will take place on May 10. The counting of votes will take place on May 13. The term of the current 224-member legislative Assembly ends on May 24.
