With Congress set to lose Madhya Pradesh yet again, uncertainty has started looming over the political fate of 77-year-old Kamal Nath, who was Congress bid for the top post in the government. Former MP CM Nath wasn’t able to ensure the grand old party’s victory even after playing a sympathy card alleging he was unceremoniously ousted from power in 2020. “Kya kasoor tha mera jo meri sarkar girayi? (What was my fault that they bring down my government?)," Kamal Nath said at an election rally in Madhya Pradesh.
The former union minister was extremely confident to win the state citing the offering he laid out in the poll manifesto. On the lines of the Karnataka election, Congress announced a plethora of welfare schemes, including the Old Pension Scheme, Rs 1,500 per month to women and an LPG cylinder at Rs 500, if he came to power. Kamal Nath probably knew it was his last push for the big dream hence he was trying to leave no stone unturned to accomplish the task.
Nath came out of his Chhindwara bastion to campaign across the state, where he prominently raised the issue of ‘back-stabbing’. He was in a dilemma that prolonged anti-incumbency and 2020 fiasco will benefit him but his dreams are shattered today when the BJP is set to retain the cow belt state with an unambiguous acceptance.
Senior Congress leaders-- Priyanka Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi-- campaigned fervidly in the state eyeing Nath’s coronation, however, all failed in face of the Shivraj Chouhan’s schemes.
Even though Congress doesn’t have a 75-plus retirement ‘rule’ like BJP, it’s still dubious whether or not Kamal Nath would be relevant/fit for politics as he would complete 82 years by the next assembly election in the state. Thus, it will not be an exaggeration if one says the dream of Kamal Nath to be at the helm in Madhya Pradesh will remain unfulfilled forever.
