Akshay Kumar’s upcoming biopic on Sir Chettur Shankaran Nair has undergone a major rebranding. Initially titled Shankara, the film will now be known as Kesari 2, a move by producer Karan Johar to establish a connection with the 2019 blockbuster Kesari, which also starred Akshay Kumar.
While Kesari 2 is not a sequel to Kesari, the rebranding is meant to highlight the thematic similarities between the two films. Both movies focus on historical events, bravery, and patriotism, making the new title a strategic choice to attract audiences who appreciated Kesari. As per a report by Peeping Moon, a source shared, "Although this film has no direct connection to Kesari, both films share a common thread of bravery, inspiration, and patriotism as their core elements."
The biopic will revolve around the life of Sir Chettur Shankaran Nair, a prominent lawyer and statesman, against the backdrop of the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre. It stars Akshay Kumar in the lead role, with R. Madhavan and Ananya Panday in key roles. The project, backed by Dharma Productions, is expected to be a large-scale period drama showcasing an important chapter of India’s history.
Apart from Kesari 2, Akshay Kumar has multiple franchise films lined up for release in 2025. These include:
Jolly LLB 3 – releasing on April 10

Housefull 5 – hitting theaters on June 6
Welcome to the Jungle – expected to release around Christmas
Akshay Kumar with Kesari 2 continues his streak of historical and patriotic films, a genre that has consistently worked well for him at the box office.
