Anupam Kher will be soon seen portraying the role of Jayaprakash Narayan in Emergency. The political drama is expected to showcase the time when former Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi imposed Emergency in India. The period of Emergency was from 1975 to 1977 for 21 months. Veteran actor Anupam Kher shared that he was in drama school in Delhi when the Emergency was imposed. He further stated that all of a sudden there was a funeral-like environment in the city. Kher also claimed that at that time Jayaprakash Narayan was the hope for the youth. 

At the trailer launch event of Emergency, Anupam Kher said “Mandi House mein humara Drama School tha.” He recalled his days at the National School of Drama (NSD) in New Delhi. The actor continued, “Suddenly ek murdani si chha gayi thi, ek silence tha (a funeral-like environment suddenly took over, an eerie silence filled the city).” 

“Jaya Prakash Narayan was the hope of the youth and nation at the time to fight against the emergency. He was my hero. When Kangana told me I am going to be playing that role, I was already wanting to do somebody who had done a role like that,” Anupam Kher added. 

The political drama was announced in 2021 by Kangana Ranaut. The actress will be seen playing the role of the former Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi. The movie has been postponed several times. Finally, the film is scheduled to release in theatres on 6th September. It stars Kangana Ranaut, Milind Soman, Vishak Nair, Mahima Chaudhry, Satish Kaushik, Bhumika Chawla, Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Christophe Guybet and Scott Alexander Young in key roles. Actor Shreyas Talpade will be playing the role of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and later actor Satish Kaushik will be seen as former Defense Minister Jagjivan Ram.
