Anurag Kashyap Reveals How Vijay Sethupathi Helped Him Finance His Daughter Aaliyah's Wedding

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, who has been working in the South film industry as an actor, has gained huge popularity after playing the main antagonist in Vijay Sethupathi’s Tamil movie Maharaja. The actor shared that he talked about his financial crisis to Sethupathi, after which the latter helped him bag a role in Maharaja. That’s how he could fund his daughter Aaliyah's wedding. In an interview with The Huddle by The Hindu, Anurag Kashyap credited Vijay Sethupathi for giving him an opportunity that eased his financial crisis. He said, “After Imaikka Nodigal, I turned down a lot of South films. Offers kept coming every other day. Then, during post-production for Kennedy, I kept bumping into Vijay Sethupathi at my neighbour’s place. He told me there’s this amazing script they’ve been trying to get to me. I initially said no. But he helped me find something in Kennedy, so I gave him a ‘Thank You’ card in the film.” 

“I told him, ‘I need to get my daughter married next year, and I don’t think I can afford it.’ And Vijay said, ‘We’ll help you.’ And that’s how Maharaja happened,” he added. 

Maharaja was one of the biggest blockbuster Tamil movies of 2024, which earned Rs 199.2 crore worldwide. The Tamil action thriller movie features Vijay Sethupathi, Anurag Kashyap, Sachana Namidass, Mamta Mohandas, Divyabharathi, Abhirami Gopikumar and Singampuli in key roles. It has been directed by Nithilan Saminathan and produced by Jagadish Palanisamy, Sudhan. It was released in theatres on June 14 in India. The film has also performed well at China box office, as it earned Rs 91.55 crore (USD 10.80 million). Maharaja is currently streaming on Netflix. 

Coming back to Anurag Kashyap, his daughter Aaliyah tied knot to his longtime boyfriend Shane Gregoire on December 11. The wedding took place in the presence of the family and close friends.
