Atlee, one of India’s most successful filmmakers, has opened up about the key factors driving his films' massive success at the box office. Currently, he is busy promoting Baby John, the Hindi adaptation of his Tamil hit Theri, which stars Varun Dhawan in the lead role and is set to release on December 25.

In a recent interview with Pinkvilla, Atlee shared insights into his journey and why all six of his films have been major hits. Known for delivering box-office blockbusters like Jawan with Shah Rukh Khan, Atlee credits his success to taking risks and crafting compelling "mass" moments.

He recalled how Vijay, the lead actor in his films Bigil and Theri, trusted him to present an older version of the character, which resonated well with audiences. Atlee also shared an anecdote about Jawan, where he convinced Shah Rukh Khan that the older character, Vikram Rathore, would be a fan favourite.

“When I told Shah Rukh sir for Jawan, ‘Sir, you wait and watch, Vikram Rathore is going to be a mass character,’ he initially disagreed, saying, ‘Girls like me; Azad will be massy.’ After watching the film, he admitted I was right,” Atlee said. The director elaborated on his unique understanding of the term “mass.” He explained that it is not just about flashy action or exaggerated moments but about evoking deep emotions.

“Mass is a mother feeling, not an alien feeling. When you tear up for a girl, an emotion, or a baby, that is mass. When you feel anger for the right reasons or stand up for society, that is mass. These are the real ‘mass’ moments,” Atlee shared. He believes this emotional connection is why his films consistently perform well and bring in significant box office numbers.

Apart from co-producing Baby John, Atlee is reportedly gearing up to announce his next directorial venture. While rumours suggest Salman Khan has agreed to work with him, Atlee has also confirmed a Tamil project with Vijay Sethupathi is in the pipeline.
