The 78th Cannes Film Festival is set to raise the curtain on the most-awaited film festival today, May 13. Ahead of its opening ceremony, the organisers have announced that nudity and excessively voluminous clothing on the red carpet are not welcome. This decision comes after a demonstrator appeared topless at Cannes 2022 and Bianca Censori's appearance in a transparent outfit at the 2025 Grammys. The festival has put a ban on nudity for decency reasons and in accordance with the institutional framework of the festival and French law.
Cannes organisers announced a new dress code that attendees must follow at the gala screenings at the Grand Théâtre Lumière.
Theofficial document by Cannes Film Festival on its website stated, “For the Grand Theatre Lumiere gala screenings taking place around 7 and 10 PM, which are attended by the artistic teams, evening wear (long dress, tuxedo) is required. Alternatively, you may also wear ‘a little black dress’, a cocktail dress, a dark-colored pantsuit, a dressy top with black pants; elegant shoes and sandals with or without a heel (no sneakers); a black or navy-blue suit with bow-tie or dark-coloured tie.”
Besides, skin showing dresses, voluminous outfits, particularly with long trains, have also been banned under new rules. As the document stated, "that hinder the proper flow of traffic of guests and complicate seating in the theatre, are not permitted."
The new dress code rules of the 78th Cannes Film Film also inlcude ban on Tote-bags, backpacks or large bags during gala screening.

Over the past few years, Cannes has faced controversy over its red carpet dress codes. Many celebrities were seen walking the red carpet in sheer and see-through dresses. Now, the new rules have restricted all that to maintain decorum in line with the set policy.
Cannes 2025 will take place from May 13 to May 24. The global stage is set to witness new fashion, new cinematic pieces and celebrities' red carpet moments.
